Canoeing on the rivers Vezere and Dordogne
Everyone who comes to stay with us enjoys a day out canoeing. No matter what age you are or how energetic there is an opportunity to go canoeing. For younger children or less active party members the Vezere offers a relaxed few hours meandering down the river in the tranquility of the Dordogne countryside and an opportunity to spot the wealth of wildlife that can be seen along the water's edge. For those who are a little more active or adventurous the Dordogne is a much bigger river and a very enjoyable day out. There are many impressive chateaux to be seen as you make your way along the river. Every now and again there are natural stopping points where you can relax, take a break during your canoeing trip. A picnic is strongly advised to really make your day perfect! |

Or you can spend a day exploring the wine regions and sampling some of the local delights. We are happy to recommend days out for you. There are opportunities to visit the vineyards, the wine making facilities and enjoy a guided tasting of many varieties of wine produced in the area. A thoroughly enjoyable day out and a chance to buy wines to take home at preferential prices.
Prehistory
The region is a world centre for prehistory
Sites & caves - Many in the area
Visit the international centre of prehistory
The International Centre of Prehistory is in Les Eyzies a short walk from the National museum of Prehistory.
Many of our guests take the opportunity to visit both the museums and the many caves to be found in the region.
Here are the notable cave trips a short stance from here:
Lascaux (paintings), Grotte de Grand roc (geological formations), Grotte de font de Gaume (paintings), Gouffre de Proumessac (Chasm & Crystal formations), Les Cent Mammouths Rouffignac (paintings & engravings) and several others.
If you wish to learn about the prehistoric period then Les Eyzies has everything: a prehistory centre, museum and a selection of caves and shelters in the vicinity which contain prehistoric paintings and engravings etc.
Les Eyzies is in the Vezere valley which is home to a large concentration of prehistoric caves and shelters, 15 of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Housed in a large modern building which is very light and airy inside the centre has various different exhibitions relating to the prehistoric period.
There is a large screen giving information in several languages about prehistory in the Vezere valley as well as film about prehistoric practices such as making weapons from flints. Other areas include an auditorium with films about the period and an animation and learning zone with workshops on archaeology and a reconstruction of an archaeological dig.
A documentation zone includes books, magazines, dvds and internet connections to relevant websites which are available to anyone to use. Some of the material is in English.
There is also a shop and a café.
Entrance to the centre is free and certainly gives some very useful background to visitors about to visit some of the caves in the area.
